Analysis Premier League: By Richard Borrowdale 2003/2004: Staked = 1180, Returned = 1150.43, Yield = -2.51%
2004/2005: Staked = 650, Returned = 636.785, Yield = -2.03%
2005/2006: Staked = 342, Returned = 320.27, Yield = -6.35% Liverpool 3-0 Wigan Wigan have lost successive games against Arsenal and Tottenham, but this is not the end of the world, because they still played OK, particularly against Arsenal. Liverpool have been on a very good run lately, and have not been conceding goals. This always gives you a chance, and this is the sort of game you would expect them to be winning. Liverpool have kept clean sheets in 5 out of 6 home games, and 10 out of 13 league games overall this season. Their problem has been that their strikers are not scoring. Wigan can trouble Liverpool here, and the odds on Under 2.5 goals are a little low, so no bets.
Blackburn 0-2 Everton Blackburn have a pretty good home record this season, but Everton are currently showing a few signs of improvement. Bar the 4-0 defeat at West Brom, Everton have played quite well lately, and are hard to beat once again. Blackburn may well win, but the odds on them are a little too low to consider. Everton don't win enough away games to take a bet on them with confidence, so no bets on this one.
Bolton 2-0 Arsenal Arsenal do not always do very well away at Bolton, but look to be coming into form at the moment. Bolton though have a very good home record, with only 1 goal conceded there so far this season. Arsenal should have the edge, but Bolton play in a way that can frustrate Arsenal. Arsenal haven't enjoyed the best of luck in their away games so far, and haven't done as well away from home as they usually do. Looking at Bolton's home record and Arsenal's away record, a home win here looks a fantastic bet. However, I just think Arsenal are on the up, and can't see them losing. Whether they will win is hard to tell, and the odds on them are probably just a little low.
Chelsea 1-0 Middlesbrough Chelsea have won every home league game this season, a run that is likely to continue here. Middlesbrough are a dangerous opponent though, a team who are capable of defending well, and with strikers who can score. Middlesbrough's problem has been conceding too many goals in the league games, but in the UEFA Cup when they have had to defend, they have done it very well. Middlesbrough will no doubt adopt a cautious attitude here and would be happy with 0-0, so I wouldn't be rushing to back Chelsea at very low odds. All the odds on the game look to be correct, so no bets here.
Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa If media reports are to be believed, both managers here (Souness and O'Leary) are on the verge of being sacked. This is probably not quite true, but both teams were extremely poor in the Carling Cup in midweek. As ever with Newcastle, Owen's fitness is the key to their chances of success. It looks like he won't play here, so immediately that rules out any possible bet on them. Emre is also likely to be missing, so Newcastle may well struggle to get the victory that they badly need. Aston Villa are not a team to put money on, even just to avoid defeat, as they were woeful against Doncaster in midweek. Home advantage could tip the game in Newcastle's favour, but I wouldn't like to bet on it.
Tottenham 3-2 Sunderland Sunderland are terrible. This is a fact that not many people can dispute, probably not even Sunderland themselves. Having said this, Tottenham can't really be trusted to win, even against such seemingly weak opposition. Sunderland do have injuries to a few key players, so you wouldn't really want to back them in any way, but Tottenham just seem to be priced too short for my liking. Yes they should win, but they don't score too many goals and have a habit of drawing when perhaps they should win. The pressure is all on Tottenham here, so Sunderland perhaps could pull off a shock. Unlikely probably, but a game I wouldn't like to bet on.
West Brom 0-0 Fulham Fulham have played a lot better than their results indicate, but haven't had the best of luck, particularly in away games. Obviously the fact that they have picked up only 2 points in 7 away games is not entirely down to luck, as Fulham are prone to defensive lapses. West Brom have performed decently in their last couple of games, so I wouldn't be looking to oppose them given Fulham's poor away record. However, Fulham are a better team than West Brom, and if Fulham have a good day they could easily win. An interesting fact is that every West Brom home game this season has had at least 3 goals, so a bet on this happening again could pay off. Bet: Over 2.5 goals Stake: 8/10 Odds: 2.10 (Canbet)
Manchester United 3-0 Portsmouth Portsmouth are fast turning into a circus, mainly due to the antics of their chairman. The players can't fail to be unsettled by everything that is going on at the moment, and I can see nothing else for them in this game other than defeat. Manchester United's form is improving, and they have enjoyed a good run in the league in recent weeks. They will know that this is a game that they simply have to win. Bet: Manchester United -1.5 (Asian Handicap) Stake: 7/10 Odds: 1.90 (Pointbet)
Charlton 2-5 Manchester City Charlton are on a horrible run of form. Losing to Blackburn in the Carling Cup after being 2-0 up must be a terrible blow to their morale, and it is hard to be too confident about them winning here. Manchester City haven't been great in recent weeks, but are still a difficult opponent for most teams. Charlton will be looking to end their losing run as soon as possible, while Manchester City also won't want to lose. A draw would be no great surprise here, in a game where all three results are possible. No bets.
Birmingham 1-2 West Ham Birmingham are showing signs of a slight revival at the moment. They won at Sunderland last week, then beat Millwall in the Carling Cup in midweek despite making hard work of it. Sunderland and Millwall aren't the best teams in the world, but these are games that needed to be won. Birmingham are starting to get their injured players back and any wins will only have helped confidence. West Ham have started the season better than most people expected, but this may have them in a slightly false position. Birmingham could easily win here despite their poor home record to date, and they are worth a small bet. Bet: Birmingham -0.25 (Asian Handicap) Stake: 5/10 Odds: 2.03 (Pointbet) |
